Selective Moral Outrage

What do you think of when you hear that term?  Hypocrisy? Bias?  People forcing their morality on you but not on themselves when it’s convenient?  How about all of the above!  Nothing is more telling of how a person or party really is than when they turn a blind eye to actions of people they support and lambaste others who do the same or similar.  People that preach the moral high ground are often those that live in houses with the most glass.

Case in point the yearbook entries of now Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh and Virginia Governor Ralph Northam.  When Kavanaugh was going thru his Supreme Court confirmation process an image of his high school yearbook photo was brought to light.  Never mind that he was 17 years old when he wrote it.  The trivial items mentioned of his time in school were criticized and vilified to no end.  Every possible way to read anything negative was magnified for the whole world to see.  This obviously speaks to the polarizing nature of our current political climate. The liberal media outlets pounced on the photo and characterized Kavanaugh with every slanderous word they could think of, regardless of the truth.  Look at the picture and read the entry.  Afterwards look at your high school yearbook entry and those of your friends at the time.  See if you or them wrote things that were silly or only made sense to you.

That outrage of a yearbook entry occurred in 2018.  Fast forward to the start of 2019.  Democratic controlled states have been on a ferocious tear to expand abortion rights to full term. Some would say they fear Roe V Wade may be challenged in the Supreme Court and want to protect a woman’s right to choose.  Typical limits on abortion across the country are 20 and 24 weeks.  Some limit the choice for abortion to the end of the first trimester and only allow for later term abortions when the health and well being of the mother are in question.

Virginia Governor Ralph Northam was recently on a radio program promoting a similar bill that was up for debate but one that included abortion after a child was born.  Here are his exact words, “When we talk about third-trimester abortions, these are done with the consent of obviously the mother, with the consent of the physician — more than one physician, by the way — and it’s done in cases where there may be severe deformities. There may be a fetus that’s non-viable,” he said. The Governor continued, “If a mother is in labor, I can tell you exactly what would happen,” Northam continued. “The infant would be delivered. The infant would be kept comfortable. The infant would be resuscitated if that’s what the mother and the family desired, and then a discussion would ensue between the physicians and the mother.”

If that sounds a lot like infanticide let’s confirm by reading what the definition of murdering a child after it is born is.  Searches across numerous websites all defined infanticide as: the act of killing an infant; the practice of killing newborn infants; a person who kills an infant.

When a video of the Governor speaking on a radio program caught national attention this week people in Virginia were outraged and the bill ultimately failed on party lines with Democrats in favor of it and Republicans voting against it. This is not where the selective moral outrage lies.  Take a look at the photo below.

That is a picture of Northam in his medical school yearbook in 1984.  What you are seeing is the future Governor posing in a picture.  One person is in blackface and the other is dressed as a Klansman.  Northam admitted he was in that picture but did not say which one he was.  The Governor has issued an apology saying he understands how offensive the picture is and promises to do better but would not agree to step down.

This story is evolving and there’s a growing wave of voices across the aisle for the Governor to step down.  Whether he chooses to do so or decides to ride out the storm is yet to be seen.  An interesting comparison between the two pictures and the treatment each has received is the mention of beer.  Both men make it a point to speak of their fondness for beer.  When Kavanaugh was going thru his confirmation process politicians on the left painted him as an alcoholic and questioned his ability to remain sober thus making him unfit to remain a judge let alone become a justice.  They have been all but silent for the Democratic Governor.

So where is the moral outrage?  Racism is evil and blackface is highly offensive.  Politicians everywhere are right to be appalled by the picture and demand for the Governor to step down.  What about the abortion bill?  Why is what amounts to the murder of an infant child who is outside of the womb acceptable to the Democratic Party?  Where is their moral compass when they vote in favor of a bill that deems it lawful to murder a child that’s living and breathing on it’s own volition? When morality is selective and outrage is reserved for political convenience can a person or party really have a right to claim morality at all?
